When Furry Friends Unleash Unprocessed Trauma: Navigating Healing with Pets

September 10, 2023February 10, 2024 Francis Colon Leave a comment

Something that might not be as cute and cuddly as our beloved furry friends the unexpected ways in which having a pet can trigger unprocessed trauma. While pets are often hailed as sources of comfort, joy, and unconditional love, the truth is, their presence can sometimes unearth painful memories, emotions, and experiences that we thought were buried deep in the past.

Now image, you bring home your new pet from the dog shelter and it pees everywhere in your home only for you to release a deep seated rage, or caring for a sick pet only to reminds you of the trauma of seeing a loved family passed from illness. All of these are ways which having a pet can trigger you.

So, what can you do when having a pet triggers unprocessed trauma? How can you navigate the complex terrain of healing while still providing the love and care your furry friend deserves? Let’s explore some strategies together.

The first step towards healing is acknowledging the emotions that arise when your pet triggers unprocessed trauma. Whether it’s anxiety, fear, sadness, or anger, allow yourself to feel whatever comes up without judgment or self-criticism. Remember, your feelings are valid, and it’s okay to seek support from trusted friends, family members, or a therapist who can offer a listening ear and a compassionate heart.

Just as we need safe spaces to process our emotions and experiences, our pets also benefit from environments where they feel secure and loved. Designate areas in your home where you and your pet can retreat when you need a moment of calm and reassurance. Whether it’s a cozy corner with blankets and pillows or a peaceful outdoor sanctuary, creating safe spaces can help both you and your furry friend feel more at ease.

Taking care of yourself is essential when navigating trauma triggers, especially when caring for a pet. Make self-care a priority by engaging in activities that bring you comfort and joy, whether it’s going for a walk in nature, practicing mindfulness and meditation, or indulging in your favorite hobbies. Remember, you can’t pour from an empty cup, so be gentle with yourself and prioritize your well-being.

If unprocessed trauma continues to impact your daily life and relationships, consider seeking support from a therapist or counselor who specializes in trauma-informed care. Therapy can provide a safe and supportive space to explore your past experiences, develop coping strategies, and cultivate resilience on your healing journey. And don’t forget, therapy isn’t just for humans – there are also animal-assisted therapy programs that offer support for both you and your pet.

Healing from trauma is a journey, not a destination, and it’s important to practice patience and compassion with yourself and your furry friend along the way. Remember that healing takes time, and setbacks are a natural part of the process. Be gentle with yourself, celebrate your progress, and lean on your support network when you need a helping hand or a comforting presence.

In the end, navigating unprocessed trauma with a pet by your side can be both challenging and rewarding. By acknowledging your feelings, creating safe spaces, practicing self-care, seeking professional support, and cultivating patience and compassion, you can navigate healing with grace and resilience – for yourself and your beloved furry friend.
